IKIGAI No.1 is a non-figurative abstract artwork created using cords and employing manipulative weaving techniques and macramé. The primary objective was to handcraft it using traditional techniques, thus reviving the artisanal aspect in Luxembourg.
As a fashion design graduate, upon my return to Luxembourg after completing my degree, I noticed a significant lack of artisans and the difficulties in finding support or employment in this particular field. It was a frustrating realization, and I am not the first person to struggle with this issue throughout history. Many artists have fought to find their place in society.
Additionally, there is the financial aspect to consider after graduating from university. With several job rejections and no stable income, it becomes challenging to acquire the necessary materials to express creativity and create art.
Each interconnected knot and cord in this artwork represents life's obstacles and the battles artists face when pursuing an artistic career. The empty spaces indicate a work in progress; the artwork is intentionally kept in a state of ongoing development, symbolizing the cycle of life. The touch of remaining blue color on the installation represents an individual's freedom, confidence, and the maintenance of hope for the future.
The word "ikigai" comes from the Japanese language and signifies a passion that brings value and joy to life. It represents the innate passion for craftsmanship that has been a part of me since birth, emphasizing the importance and meaning of art in my life. Growing up surrounded by art, especially in times of uncertainty, art provides me with peace and serves as a meditative escape for my mind.
Through this artwork, my goal is to convey the importance of preserving traditional artisanal techniques, the challenges artists face in society, and the personal significance of art as a source of fulfillment and tranquility in my life.
